Ben Boyd & South East National Park

24th till 29th September 2012

Staying in Merimbula for a few casual days we explored the south end of NSW including Ben Boyd National Park. Nice NP with easy gravel road to very windy Lighthouse. Also checked out the whaling station across the lagoon of Eden. Again seen a red-belly snake and this time even got a picture.

After restocking supplies we planned a few days in South East National Park. Forecast looked good and we had a great walk from Alexanders Hut. Seen some wild wombat and interesting and changing surroundings. The hut has been used until 1980 before it became a shelter for hikers and campers. After a windy night we decided to head down Postman's Track out of the National Park. Unfortunately for us we followed the signed posted in the park which lead us down an old and not used anymore path. The descent became rapidly a heavy 4WD challenge and once commited there is no return. On the bottom of the hill approx. 200m away from farmland there was a huge tree across the track. Shit. As we had phone reception we called the rangers only to be told that the wind did major damage in the park and they have to send out some guys with chainsaws to cut us out. After hours of waiting finally the rangers arrived and we had to do the hole steep climb again. Our Prado made us proud though and unlike the rangers we didn't have to winch up our car!! Glad to get out of the park we stayed overnight in Bombala as we smashed our back window during the rescue exercise. Well bad luck but happy to be out and safe.
We learned from the rangers regardless where we would have been in the park, all tracks were closed and impassable because of fallen tree and branches. So one way we were "lucky" to be stuck somewhere with phone reception.

Mimosa Rocks & Bournda National Park

17th till 24th September 2012

After Canberra and a few days in South Durras to recharge all our equipment, wash our clothes and have a long warm shower, we were heading further south. Our next stop was the Mimosa National Park. Only basic facilities, means no shower, water or power. Only nature and free fire wood. Most beautiful camp site so far - hearing the waves and birds and beautiful sunshine as well as relaxing and walking along the beach! After these 2 gorgeous days we stopped in Tathra for a coffee and surf.

With a strong need for a shower we drove to Bournda National Park where the facilities are luxurious - warm showers and rainwater. We did a long bush walk where Sarah nearly stepped on a red-belly black snake. We also had to wade through a river as the walking track was flooded - we only saw the sign after we returned!!

This was the walking track... so shoes off and pants up!

Braidwood 4WD Course & Canberra

15th till 17th September 12

Braidwood
Off to learning driving off road! Up and down steep gravel hills, mud and river crossings, over stones and tree trunks - our car is finally dirty! It was a fantastic weekend, lots of fun with a good bunch of people!

Canberra
From Braidwood we drove to Canberra to visit Jon and Danielle, former work colleagues. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner, nice wine and later a warm bed! Thanks Jon, Danielle, Shonnie and Jessica!
Floriade was on in Commonwealth Park, so we decided to check out the beautiful flowers and were surprised to see Bonsai trees that were more than 60 years old! After this, of course a must to see Parliament House before heading back to the slightly warmer coast - Batemans Bay area.

Booderee & Murramarang National Park

10 till 14th September
Booderee National Park
We headed further south to Booderee National Park (Jervis Bay) to enjoy the white beaches - even though still too cool for swimming sadly! There we saw several bush and beach wallabies, many cheeky possums, lots of different birds as well as dolphins! While walking along Telegraph Creek Nature trail, we saw lots of beautiful flowers including a Waratah which is very rare in wild. On our way back to the camp ground, we saw a 2m snake, luckily it wasn't too close!

Murramarang National Park - Depot Beach
Still freezing nights, dropped down to 1c, so off into our sleeping bags and beanies over night! We enjoyed a nice sunset before we had our first day of rain. We spent a bit time sitting in the laundry as this was the only sheltered area - wanting to jump on the internet, but of course there was no mobile or internet connection! So this meant reading and playing the guitar in the small room... Several roos came to visit us under our awning, sometimes so close we couldn't get to our car doors anymore!

Royal National Park & Gerroa

Royal National Park
4 till 7th September 12

We left Collaroy on 4th September and headed south to the Royal National Park. We enjoyed the first day with beautiful sunshine and a glass of wine at the water shore. The following day strong wind came up, and we had to rush rigging down tent and awning so it wouldn't be ripped off! Of course we didn't miss out on some beautiful walks through the National Park.

Gerroa
7th till 10th September

Still cold nights and strong wind (40kn with gusts up to 50kn!), so trying to keep warm with tea and whiskey! Per and Micaela joined us for the weekend in Gerroa at Seven Mile Beach. Explored the area, enjoyed coffees and surfing.
